A Hownam pensioner has raised well over £800 for a mental health charity by completing a sponsored walk – the 62-mile St Cuthbert’s Way which stretches from Melrose to Holy Island. As reported in The Southern last month, Sarah Dixon, 76, was inspired to do something for Mental Health Research UK (MHRUK) in memory of her former husband, a schizophrenia sufferer. She told us earlier this week: “The walk took place over seven days between Wednesday, May 30, and Tuesday, June 5. The walk went brilliantly and apart from one wet day, the weather was fine and sunny most of the time. “Three of us completed the whole walk and 15 others joined us for a day or more along the way, plus the odd dog here and there. Some of our walkers came from Edinburgh, North Yorkshire and even Bristol. We also met South Africans and Australians along the route who kindly donated money to our charity. “To date we have raised £868 for MHRUK. An amazing result. Donations have come from many sources – local shops and cafes, two ‘Just Giving’ pages and money that has been handed or sent to me.” Further donations can be posted to Sarah at the Old Coach House, Hownam TD5 8AL, or phone her on 01573 440277 if you wish to donate on her Just Giving page (see below).

I am raising money for Mental Health Research UK by walking St. Cuthberts Way (62.5 miles). I last did this walk 6 years ago, but HELP, in my advancing years I am thinking - can I still do it!  Your sponsorship will spur me on my way - AND will be doing so much for this worthy charity. 

We all know someone who has suffered from mental illness. It accounts for a third of all illness, but research into mental illness attracts less than 10 percent of all health related research funds. Please give your support to the cause of advancing the knowledge and understanding of mental health and reducing the pain and suffering that comes from mental illness.

95% of all donations to Mental Health Research UK go to research projects, the results of which will greatly improve lives in the future.

Sarah Dixon is walking St Cuthbert’s Way over 7 days as a sponsored charity walk in aid of Mental Health Research UK (, and invites you to join her either for individual days or for the whole walk of 62.5 miles. The first four days are never longer than 9 miles and are all accessible by a bus service.

To raise money for the charity we would ask for a donation of £4 per day or £20 for the whole walk. ALL of this money would go to the valuable work of the charity which is dedicated to fundraising research into mental illness and pledges to give no less than 95% of all donations received to the charity. If you can secure sponsorship to do the walk – even better!


Day One Wednesday 30 May, Melrose to St Boswell’s – 7.5 miles  Meet at St Boswells for the 0927 Bus (No 67) to Melrose

Day Two Thursday 31 May, St Boswell’s to Jedfoot Bridge – 9 miles  Cars left at Jedfoot Bridge 0845. Walk short distance to junction with A68. Catch 0905 Bus (No 68) to St Boswell’s

Day Three Friday 1 June, Jedfoot Bridge to Morebattle – 9 miles  Meet at Morebattle for the 0825 Bus (No 81/81A) to Kelso  From Kelso catch the 0910 Bus (No 20) to Jedfoot Bridge

Day Four Saturday 2 June, Morebattle to Kirk Yetholm – 6.5 miles  Meet at Kirk Yetholm for 0922 Bus (No 81/81A) to Morebattle

Day Five Sunday 3 June, Kirk Yetholm to Wooler – 13 miles  Shared cars or shared taxi, to be arranged beforehand. Aim to start walk from Kirk Yetholm at 9 am

Day Six Monday 4 June, Wooler to Beal – 14 miles  Shared cars or shared taxi to be arranged beforehand. Aim to start walk from Wooler at 9 am.

Day Seven Tuesday 5 June, Beal to the Holy Island via the causeway – 4 miles  Cars left at Beal. Safe crossing time from 1015 am to 1845 pm. Walk across the causeway to the Holy Island and return by Bus (No 477)
